Welcome remark
MSE in POSTECH
for Core Center
of Global Materials Research
Department of Materials Science & Metallurgical Engineering was established in December 1986, along with the foundation of POSTECH. The name was changed to Department of Materials Engineering and Metallurgical in 1990 and eventually confirmed as Department of Materials Science & Engineering in 2001. For undergraduate program, only 30 freshmen enrolled in 1987 and the number of students increased to 35 in 1990. Currently, 25 students join the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the beginning every year, together with additional 10 students who will decide to join the department after one-year study. For graduate program, 15 master students and 5 doctoral students enrolled in 1988 and nowadays about 55 graduate students (master, doctoral and integrated program) are admitted every year. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering plays an important role of connecting science and engineering following the university philosophy of “The world-leading university in the material’s research”. The department has been participating in the 2nd stage BK project (Brain Korea Program for Leading Universities & Students which support new knowledge and skills based on creativity) for long-term development, initiated by the Ministry of Education and Science.
Currently, about 30 undergraduate and 50 graduate students receive their degrees annually, who can further get an advanced education, or study abroad, or pursue a career in domestic companies or research institutes.
