Material Science and Engineering, the foundational knowledge for the renovation of the future technology
The founding tenet of POSTECH states “Pohang University of Science and Technology not only focuses on advanced research in diverse fields of basic science and engineering by cooperating closely with world-leading universities, but also strives to develop itself as a global hub for research related to the materials sector.” Along with the founding tenet, we, as a fundamental department of POSTECH which aims to contribute to humanity by leading the future of science and engineering, have become a world-class department in the field of materials by realizing excellence in education and research.
The name was changed to the Department of Materials Science & Engineering in June 2001 reflecting the development of not only materials but also related fields such as new material development, next-generation energy source research, and biomaterial research. In 2020, our excellence in education and research has been recognized by the 4th stage BK project (Brain Korea Program for Leading Universities & Students), supported by the Ministry of Education, and we are building the foundation for long-term development of the department, establishing ourselves as a leading player in the field of science and industry. Currently, about 30 undergraduate and 50 graduate students receive their degrees annually.
