Abstract:

In materials science, multiple tasks require flexible numerical approaches for modeling, design, prognoosis, material elaboration, and analysis of properties. There exist various global search and optimization methods suitable for such purposes. One of valuable methods is termed genetic algorithms (GAs). They were first described in a book by John Holland (1975). The invention has been inspired by biological principles of evolution. The scheme of the method consists in creation of a population of trial solutions (entities): this population evolves, providing new generations according to the basic principles of evolution, using the operators of crossover, mutation and selection. The method allows for a search in a large parameter space. After stopping the evolution process, the fittest entity is treated as the final solution of the given task. The GAs have been successfully applied for optimization of crystal growth, materials synthesis, for design of materials with desired structural and physicochemical properties, in working out modern devices based on specific physical principles, as well as in improvement of methods of materials characterization. The GAs are also helpful in organizing the material or device production at the industrial scale. Representative examples selected from recent literature will be presented to demonstrate the usefulness of this computational approach in materials science.
