Industrial technology on circulation and materialization of rare earths

Abstract:

 

Rare earth elements (REE) are the key components of the 4th industrial revolution and are used in IT, automobile and renewable energy fields. REE minerals occur in rare earth mines mainly in the form of oxides and REEs are extracted by adding acid and basic solutions to the rare earth minerals. However, this process produces large amount of waste water and radioactive elements such as thorium and uranium which are environmentally harmful. Therefore, a new supply route has been studied in consideration of environmental aspects and economics. In domestic sector, where there is no rare earth mine, the development of rare earth supply routes is being actively pursued through the recycling process. In the hydro-metallurgy recycling, the same process as that for extracting rare earths from rare earth minerals is carried out, but the radioactive substances thorium and uranium are not generated. However, waste water is still causing environmental pollution and there are many restrictions. Recently, pyro-metallurgy recycling has been developed to minimize environmental pollution. Among them, ReMat process using liquid metal extraction such as magnesium (Mg); molten magnesium and rare earth magnet scrap undergo liquid / solid reaction, rare earths are diffused into the magnesium region and recovered as a magnesium-rare earth alloy. All materials are recycled and the amount of CO2 generated is much lower than other pyrometallurgical processes. . In addition to developing this recycling technology, to raise people's awareness about necessity of rare earth recycling, leading international standard for recycling in international standard ISO / TC298 Rare earth  are also being developed.
