Scalable 1D networks for topological quantum computation applications

Abstract:

 

Topological superconducting states of matter can be realized by interfacing a one-dimensional (1D) semiconductor channel to a superconductor, which may exhibit zero-energy Majorana quasiparticle excitations (Majorana zero modes) in the presence of superconducting proximity effect. The zero-bias conductance peak of Majorana zero modes is predicted to be quantized to the universal conductance value of 2e2/h, and the topologically protected quantization has been recently demonstrated. Now the experimental efforts in this research field focus on non-Abelian exchange (braiding) of the Majorana quasiparticles in order to realize a quantum bit and eventually a topological quantum computer. An immediate challenge for the next-stage experimental milestones is how to realize scalable 1D semiconductor-superconductor networks consisting of multiple Majorana zero modes. I will talk about three approaches that have been recently pursued to overcome the challenge: 1) synthesizing self-assembled 1D nanowire networks with superconductor islands, 2) processing nanostructures on two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems with an epitaxial superconductor top layer, and 3) selective-area growth of in-plane 1D channel networks with in-situ deposition of a superconductor. Structural characterizations and electronic transport studies will be discussed. These advances in electronic material platforms may enable the experimental realization of a topological quantum bit in the near future
