Abstract:

 

Advanced lithium-ion battery systems are vital to meet the continuous energy demands for practical applications such as electronic devices, electric vehicles, and smart-grids. The use of nanostructuring concept is one of the most attractive strategies to dramatically enhance battery performance, including capacity, rate capability, cycling life, and safety. Here, we present nanostructuring of silicon-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. We employed commercially available bulk Si or SiO powder to produce three-dimensional porous Si-based anode materials, by combining a metal deposition and metal-assisted chemical etching process. The Si-based electrodes having porous structures accommodate large volume changes during lithium insertion and extraction. These materials showed a highly stable cycling performance over 100 cycles. As second topic, we have used metallotheric reduction process to synthesize porous Si (or) Ge materials. Starting from inexpensive silica and/or germanium oxide materials, battery anode materials with highly stable cycling stability have been synthesized. In the last section, we employed the self-assembly of block copolymers to fabricate multifunctional polymer separator which can lead to macro/nanoscale porous structures and chemical functionalities far beyond those accessible with conventional approaches.
