Abstract:

 

Photovoltaic (PV) cells that utilize lead chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) in the active

layer have recently gained much attention and offered the potential to achieve high

efficiency owing to their favorable optical properties, including facile bandgap tunability

and wide spectral responses. Yet, despite these beneficial optical properties, the

performance of QD-PVs is still limited, and a key bottleneck in improving efficiency lies

in our lack of a detailed microscopic understanding on the role of ligand chemistry in the

electronic properties of QD films. In this talk, I will focus on two different features in the

electronic structure of QDs: (1) trap states, (2) band-edge energy levels, both of which,

we have found from density functional theory simulations, can be controlled through

surface ligand engineering. These findings complement the known bandgap tunability of

QDs and highlight additional levels of control over the electronic properties of PbS QDs.

Wisely and appropriately chosen ligands allow both minimized amount of trap states and

optimized band alignments. Together with our experimental collaborators, we have used

these calculations to enhance and optimize the performance of PbS solar cells,

demonstrating a certified efficiency of 8.6%.
