Abstract:

Recently many breakthroughs have been achieved in research on graphene, the first two-dimensional atomic crystal. This one-atom-thick sheet of carbon becomes the next disruptive technology, replacing some of currently used materials and leading to new markets. It is versatile enough to revolutionize many aspects of our life in the near future. In terms of its properties, graphene has very unique material parameters: mechanical stiffness, strength, and elasticity, very high electrical and thermal conductivity, and many others. These properties suggest that graphene could replace other materials in existing applications. Moreover, since all these extreme properties are combined in one material, graphene could also enable several disruptive technologies. For example, the combination of transparency, conductivity and elasticity find use in flexible electronics, whereas transparency, impermeability and conductivity can discover applications in transparent protective coating and barrier films. Therefore, the list of such combinations is continuously growing. Here, we will review recent progresses in graphene research and discuss the industrial feasibility of diverse graphene applications.
