Abstract

 

Human bodies are highly vascularized to transport oxygen, nutrients, red blood cells, and hormones to and from cells in tissues and organs.  As such, cardiovascular disease resulting from vascular occlusion, leakage, and rupture is the world’s leading cause of death.  Extensive efforts were made to detect and treat these cardiovascular diseases using diverse bioactive molecules, imaging probes, and stem cells.  These biomedical modalities are often integrated with various engineering technologies to further improve their performance.  To contribute these efforts, we have been developing various implantable devices that can elevate the quality of vascular regeneration by integrating material chemistry, 3D printing, and self-assembly.  In this talk, I will introduce several advanced devices including (1) a “Living” microvascular stamp that can control the organization of blood vessel during regeneration (Fig. 1a), (2) a self-folding hydrogel that can modulate vascular drug release with its shape change (Fig. 1b), and nanomaterials used to engineer stem cell surface for cell delivery to inflamed blood vessels (Fig 1c).  Additionally, I will discuss a nanoparticle designed to enhance quality of magnetic resonance imaging for ischemic tissue (Fig. 1d).  


 


Biography

Hyunjoon Kong is an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and also LAS Centennial Scholar. He also holds affiliation with the Department of Bioengineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology and Neuroscience Program. He received his engineering education from the University of Michigan (Ph. D. 2001), and performed post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. He joined the University of Illinois in 2007.  To dates, he received the Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association, the Career Award from NSF, Center for Advanced Study Fellowship, and the UIUC Engineering Dean’s Award for Research Excellence. He also has published 87 papers in various peer-reviewed journals.
