Title: 2D materials and beyond: Modeling efforts in AFRL

Abstract:

Emerging carbon materials and other 2 dimensional atomic crystals, with potential applications in a broad spectrum, have been attracting scientific interests from a wide range of communities. AFRL is also interested in those emerging materials as potential replacements of conventional electronics materials in non-commercial applications. Particular thrusts of our research are toward the electron and phonon dynamics in emerging nano structures as well as the synthesis of them. This talk will introduce the general scope of research being performed in our branch with a few examples of specific modeling tasks in non-technical terms. Topics will include van der Waals hetero-structures of 2D crystals, band-gap engineering of Graphene, and solid state thermal rectifier.

Speaker Bio:

Jonghoon Lee received his B.S (1998) degree in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University. He received his Ph.D (2004) degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida with his work on computational complex fluids under the supervision of Prof. Tony Ladd. Later, as a postdoctoral associate, he worked on the polymer field theory with Prof. Glenn Fredrickson in UCSB. Then, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for polymer research in Mainz, Germany, as a Humboldt research fellow in the theory division. Since 2009, he has been working at Air Force Research Laboratory as an on-site contract research scientist. His current research interest is in the application of statistical physics and computational methods on the energy carrier problems in nano-structures.
